Last night, during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, there was an attempted shooting in the vicinity, including shots fired, prompting an immediate and coordinated response from the U.S. Secret Service and local law enforcement. One law enforcement officer was injured in the incident. We are grateful for the swift and courageous action that brought the situation under control and protected those in the area.
This moment comes in the wake of growing concern about political violence in our country, including the attempted assassination of President Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. That attack was a chilling reminder of how fragile public safety can be, and how quickly chaos can erupt.
In Butler, and again last night in Washington, we saw lives put at risk. And yet, we also saw something powerful: law enforcement officers who ran toward danger without hesitation, determined to protect others at all costs. We are deeply thankful for their bravery, professionalism, and sacrifice.
We are grateful that President Trump was spared in Butler. Many Americans of faith were reminded in that moment—and others like it—that God’s hand of protection remains over those who serve and lead. We do not take those moments for granted.
Most importantly, we are thankful that last night’s situation was contained quickly and that no lives were lost. Our prayers are with the injured officer and their family, and we are praying for a full and swift recovery.
Even in moments of darkness, we continue to see the strength of those who protect our communities and the resilience of the American spirit. We remain committed to ensuring safety, preserving order, and protecting the freedoms, including free speech and civic engagement, that define our nation.
