I opened a checking account at a local bank in 2002. In August 2025 that account was hacked on four separate occasions totaling $10,400. With no information from the bank about what policies or insurances were available for checking account theft, I reported the crime to Chambers County Sheriff’s Department. I was told banks have the necessary computer networks and technology to properly investigate unauthorized transactions, not the Sheriff’s Department.
Therefore, to some degree, banks are investigating themselves. Not ideal for an unbiased determination on who’s at fault for a breach of security.
Recently, I expressed my disappointment to the bank with the remaining unanswered questions.
Primarily, what policies or guaranties are available for unauthorized transactions and theft for customers?
Still no answers. Is this typical in the banking industry or at my bank only?
I believe banks have a moral obligation to all customers. Banks should not value profits more than the safety and financial security of every single depositor.
A bank should set aside a small portion of their profits to guarantee depositors secure and safe distribution of all funds. This should be a law.
This guarantee would also inspire timely, complete investigations to help remedy future theft and fulfill a bank’s claim of being customer friendly.
I am struggling to just let this go. All account holders should have a guarantee of complete financial protection. If you’ve had a similar experience, feel free to contact me. Call or text 713-256-4923.
