Austin, TX – Representative Terri Leo Wilson has announced the withdrawal of House Bill 2944 from consideration by the House Transportation Committee. The bill, initially scheduled for a hearing on Thursday, March 27th, proposed the designation of State Highway 87 as a hurricane evacuation route. Following a constructive meeting with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) on Monday, the agency has committed to expediting the designation of SH 87 as a hurricane evacuation route without the need for legislative action.
“Ensuring the safety of residents on the Bolivar Peninsula has always been my priority,” said Representative Terri Leo Wilson. “I’m grateful to Chairman Tom Craddick for setting this bill for a hearing and facilitating essential dialogue with TxDOT. Through these productive discussions, we have achieved a direct commitment to proper signage and the official designation of SH 87 from Crystal Beach to SH 124 as a hurricane evacuation route. This proactive step enhances public safety and strengthens our emergency preparedness.”
TxDOT officials have expressed their support for the decision and reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the necessary signage and route designation swiftly.
“As hurricane season approaches, it is important that the residents of the Bolivar Peninsula have a dedicated and safe system to move off the island, if needed. SH 87 from Crystal Beach to SH 124 will be a designated hurricane evacuation route moving forward,” wrote Thomas Albritton, TxDOT Houston District Engineer in his follow up response to Rep. Leo Wilson.
House Bill 2944 aimed to ensure SH 87 was recognized as a critical evacuation pathway, enhancing readiness for future storms and providing peace of mind for coastal residents and tourists. Representative Leo Wilson remains committed to advocating for the resilience and safety of communities in her district.
