Marie Hughes, longtime co-director of the Chambers County Museum at Wallisville, was honored at last month’s Texas Press Association conference for her historical writings. Hughes won first place in the column writing category for a series of five articles she wrote for The Baytown Sun.
The series of articles is titled “Wallisville Whispers/Tales from the Past”. The articles are (1) Montie Humphrey/Texas’ First Black Ranch Foreman of a White Ranch, date February 9, 2025; (2) Veterans’ Day Salute – Part 1, Burl Morris: From Bataan to Hell and Back, date November 9, 2025; (3) Veterans’ Day Salute – Part 2, Burl Morris: From Bataan to Hell and Back, date November 11, 2025; (4) Korea: Remembering the Forgotten War – Part 1, PFC James Owen, USMC, date July 22, 2025; and (5) Korea: Remembering the Forgotten War – Part 2, PFC James Owen, USMC, date July 27, 2025.
Hughes is a gifted writer that embraces the history of Chambers County and its storied inhabitants. She brings to life the experiences of the subjects she writes about for the enjoyment of the readers. She has written several books on the historical aspects of Chambers County as well as a cookbook showcasing the seafood cuisine of the county.
