Memorial Day is a time for Americans to honor and remember the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our great country. Observed each year on the last Monday in May, the holiday is marked by ceremonies, tributes, and moments of reflection in communities across the nation. From the placement of American flags on veterans’ graves to local remembrance events, Memorial Day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made to protect the freedoms enjoyed today.
A tradition that Veteran Ed Bangart, retired Sergeant Major U.S. Army, began in 2004 when he was Commander of the American Legion in Winnie has continued for over two decades. There are over 200 Veterans buried in the Fairview Cemetery located in Winnie, TX. Each year, local Scout Troops, Scout Packs, Veterans, Masons, and volunteers have participated in placing the flags at Veteran gravesides in reverence and honor of Memorial Day. This year, Scout Troop 39 and Scout Pack 39 of Hamshire, American Legion Veterans, and Scout Troop 105 of Mont Belvieu all had representatives placing flags to honor those who died in the service of our country.
The Seabreeze Beacon honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom. You will never be forgotten. “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” – John 15:13.
