I almost got in a car accident. I was distracted as I slowly inched through a stop sign; In just enough time, I slammed on the brakes, avoiding a collision. I raised my hand and repeatedly apologized in hopes that the other driver would accept my pleas for forgiveness.

Once I began to move forward again, my eyes were in my rearview mirror, making sure that the car I almost assaulted wasn’t turning around to chase me down. I was so enraptured by the mistake that I lost sight of the road in front of me, and while I stared into my rearview mirror, a loud “honk” from a car warned me that I was about to run another stop sign.

1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

When God forgives us, we often fail to recognize that forgiveness is freedom to move on. We focus on the past instead of looking to the future that God made possible. Let’s begin 2026 with our eyes on the road to God’s glory rather than the rearview mirror of our broken past.
