The Original Longhorns… An Icon on the Edge

Several dozen people gathered at the Chambers County Museum in Wallisville last Thursday afternoon for a special presentation by Dr. Frank Sharp, Lead Educator of the Official State of Texas Longhorn Herd, and author, historian, and “genuine” cowboy, Jim Hodges, on the original Longhorns and their struggle for survival.
Dr. Sharp guided the audience down the dusty trails traveled by the iconic Texas Longhorn, tracing its remarkable history and revealing the troubling story of how this enduring symbol of the Texas prairie is rapidly becoming a vanishing breed. Hodges described the “hoofprints” of this legendary breed and explored the legacy it has left across the Texas landscape.
James and Carol Gentz of Gentz Cattle Company attended the presentation. The Gentz’s have been breeding Longhorns for over 20 years and market the lean meat of the Longhorn. They were able to provide an interesting perspective of the Longhorn being raised at their ranch in Winnie.
