AUSTIN- Yesterday, Senator Mayes Middleton passed SB 379 in the Senate, which removes junk food and sweetened drinks like soda from the taxpayer funded SNAP (food stamp) program. President Trump, USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins, and HHS Secretary RFK Jr. have made Making America Healthy Again one of their top priorities.

“This bill helps make sure food stamps can’t be used to purchase junk foods and sweetened drinks that we know are bad for us, and are making Texans sick,” said Senator Mayes Middleton. “This is common sense. According to the USDA, 20% of SNAP households’ food expenditures were on sweetened beverages, desserts, salty snacks, and candy. Notably, sweetened beverages alone accounted for 9.3% of these expenditures.”

“It is disturbing that soda companies are paying online influencers to oppose this Bill and keep Americans sick. Junk food doesn’t even satisfy the purpose of the SNAP program which is nutrition and health.”

“Taxpayer funded junk food turns into taxpayer funded healthcare,” Middleton continued. “This bill is not about restricting individual buying power, but rather making sure taxpayer funded food stamps are used to buy nutritious food essential to health and well-being.”

Senate Bill 379 will now be considered in the Texas House of Representatives.
