What a fun end to the week. The East Chambers Buccaneer Swim Team traveled to San Antonio on Thursday, February 12th – Friday, February 13th to compete at the 4A State Swim and state is a whole other level. It is a much bigger stage. Everything feels bigger. The venue. The crowd. The pressure. The expectations. It is not easy to compete there.
Emotions run high and the competition is fierce. I will never forget our first year at state looking around at how big and experienced everyone else seemed compared to our fellas.
Well… our boys have caught up.
2023 Our first year of swim we had two individuals qualify. Hayden LeVeck and Brandt Meaux.
2024 We qualified one boys relay the medley relay and two individuals Reid Todd and Brandt Meaux.
2025 We qualified two boys relays the 200 freestyle and the 400 freestyle and one individual Hayden LeVeck.
2026 We qualified all three boys relays and four individuals Kalyssa Fontenot, Hayden LeVeck, Koby Jones and Chip Franklin.
Same goal as last year. Top 8 with any event but the 200 relay had the top rankings going in.
And they did it in the 200 relay!
Results:
Our medley relay Reid back, Chip breast, Drew fly, and Koby free finished 16th in the state.
Kalyssa placed 15th in the 200 free and 16th in the 100 fly.
Chip finished 14th in the 50 free.
Hayden placed 15th in the 100 free.
Our 200 freestyle relay Hayden, Reid, Koby and Chip finished 5th in the state.
Our 400 freestyle relay had an incredible swim and finished 10th in the state. So close to finals and such a gutsy performance.
Drew did not swim the 200 free relay at state but he helped get us there. He gave up an individual event because he knew it was best for the team as we tried to qualify all three relays. Koby and Drew both sacrificed individual opportunities for the good of the team. When you have a small group you have to be creative and these boys are all in for each other.
And here is what makes this even more impressive. We do not compete against schools our size. We compete in 4A. These teams have deep rosters, year round swimmers and numbers we simply do not have. Yet here we are.
In just four short years we have gone from hoping to be there, to making A finals, to finishing 5th in the state.
And let’s not forget this is all with two hours of swim practice a week. Two hours. Their other sports and time in the weight room absolutely play a role and we are so grateful for every EC coach who pushes our kids to be their best. It paid off.
We accomplish a lot with so little. We cannot wait to see what the future of swim at EC holds.
