The Texas Education Agency (TEA) released its long-awaited grades for schools last Thursday, April 24th. It is the first time scores for underperforming schools have been made public in five years. The ratings reflect performance from the 2022-2023 school year due to a lawsuit-induced two-year delay over how the ratings are calculated. TEA is prevented from sharing more recent school ratings from the 2023-24 school year due to a separate, ongoing lawsuit. School performance ratings from the 2024-25 school year are scheduled to be issued in August 2025.

Under the state’s school rating system, all districts and campuses got a letter grade for the 2022-23 school year. Of the nearly 1,200 districts evaluated in the state, 10.4% got an A, 73% got a B or a C, and 16.6% got a D or an F.

How is Overall Performance calculated? Overall grades for districts and schools are calculated based on performance in three key areas, or domains. TEA takes the higher score between how much students know (Student Achievement) and how much better students are doing than last year or than peers in similar schools (School Progress). We then consider whether performance gaps exist among different groups of students (Closing the Gaps). This design reflects a commitment to recognizing high student achievement and the impact of highly effective educators while maintaining focus on the students most in need. Ratings options for the overall score out of 100 are as follows: A: 90 -100, B: 80 – 89, C: 70 – 79, D: – 60 – 69; F – 0 – 59.

  Barbers Hill ISD – A.

Districts or schools earn an “A” (90–100) for exemplary performance when they serve most students well, encouraging high academic achievement and/or appropriate academic growth for almost all students. Most students will be prepared for eventual success in college, a career, or the military.

  East Chambers ISD – B.

Districts or schools earn a “B” (80–89) for recognized performance when they serve many students well, encouraging high academic achievement and/or appropriate academic growth for most students.

   Anahuac ISD – C.

Districts or schools earn a “C” (70–79) for acceptable performance when they serve many students well but need to provide additional academic support to many more students.

  Hamshire-Fannett ISD – C.

Districts or schools earn a “C” (70–79) for acceptable performance when they serve many students well but need to provide additional academic support to many more students.
