Sheriff Brian Hawthorne reports that on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at approximately 3:00 AM, Chambers County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to a report of suspicious activity in the 900 block of Winzer Road in Winnie, Texas. The 911 caller reported that their vehicle alarm had been triggered and observed an individual walking around the car with a flashlight. By the time deputies arrived, the suspect had fled the scene.
A short time later, deputies located the vehicle traveling westbound at a high rate of speed on Interstate Highway 10 near the 819 Mile Marker. A traffic stop was conducted, and deputies initiated an investigation. The driver was identified as Derrick Andrew Trahan of Anahuac, Texas. During the stop, deputies discovered a .22 caliber rifle and two freshly cut catalytic converters in the vehicle.
Further investigation revealed that Trahan had outstanding warrants. He was taken into custody and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon and Unlawful Possession of a Catalytic Converter.
Sheriff Hawthorne said, “I want to personally thank the deputies who responded to this incident for their quick response and professionalism. Their dedication and investigative efforts reflect our department’s commitment to public safety. I’d also like to thank the 911 caller for promptly reporting this incident and encourage all residents to report any suspicious activity. Your cooperation is essential in keeping our communities safe.”
