The Houston Astros remain firmly in the American League playoff race as they continue a critical road trip through Washington ahead of a weekend showdown with the Texas Rangers.

Entering Tuesday night’s action, Houston owns a 45-47 record and sits third in the American League West, just 2½ games behind the division-leading Seattle Mariners and one game out of the final American League Wild Card position. After winning consecutive games to close out a series victory over the Tampa Bay Rays, the Astros have gained momentum heading into the season’s second half.

Houston wraps up its three-game series against the Washington Nationals on Wednesday before traveling to Arlington for a pivotal three-game series against the Rangers beginning Friday. The divisional matchup could significantly impact the AL West standings heading into the All-Star break.

Despite an up-and-down first half, the Astros have played some of their best baseball over the past several weeks. Improved starting pitching, a dependable bullpen, and timely offense have kept Houston within striking distance of both the division lead and a postseason berth.

With the Major League Baseball trade deadline approaching later this month, the Astros are expected to be active buyers if they remain in contention. Reports indicate Houston is exploring additions to bolster its lineup, particularly a left-handed power-hitting outfielder. Players linked to the Astros in recent trade speculation include Boston’s Jarren Duran, Detroit’s Kerry Carpenter, Pittsburgh’s Ryan O’Hearn, and Colorado’s Mickey Moniak, although no deals have been completed.

Houston’s upcoming schedule provides an opportunity to gain ground. After concluding the series in Washington, the Astros face the Rangers in a key AL West matchup before returning home following the All-Star break.

With nearly half the season remaining, Houston controls much of its own postseason fate. A strong finish before the break and a productive trade deadline could position the Astros for another run at October baseball.
