America Reaches Higher: Artemis II Returns Home

Last week, our nation witnessed history.

I had the distinct honor of watching the Artemis II astronauts return safely to Earth, standing inside Mission Control at Johnson Space Center as they completed the most dangerous phase of their mission. Splashdown is the hardest part of any journey to space, where precision, discipline, and courage must come together perfectly. And once again, America’s astronauts delivered.

These four brave men and women represent the very best of this country. Their strength, professionalism, and resolve reflect the spirit that has always set the United States apart. For ten days, the world watched as they traveled beyond low Earth orbit, pushing farther than any human has gone in over half a century.

I also had the opportunity to speak directly with these astronauts while they were in deep space. Hearing their voices from that distance was a powerful reminder of just how far American leadership can reach.

When I asked Christina Koch about a moment she would relive, she didn’t hesitate. She described witnessing a rare solar eclipse from space, watching the Moon pass in front of the Sun, with Earth, Mars, and even Saturn all visible in a single breathtaking view.

They captured that moment, and it is nothing short of stunning. Experiences like that only happen because the United States leads.

This mission proves something powerful: America is ready.

Ready to lead. Ready to explore. Ready to take the next great step forward with boots back on the Moon, and soon.

We are in a new space race, and there is no question who must lead it. As nations like China accelerate their ambitions, Artemis II shows the world that the United States is not standing still. We are setting the pace. We are defining the future.

What struck me most was not just the technical achievement but the unity behind it. All across this country—and indeed, across the globe—people were watching, praying, and cheering for the safe return of these astronauts. In a divided world, moments like this remind us of what we can accomplish together.

After splashdown, I had the privilege of welcoming these heroes home. Looking them in the eye, shaking their hands, and thanking them for their service was something I will never forget. They carry with them the hopes of a nation and the promise of what lies ahead.

Artemis II is more than a mission. It is a declaration.

America is back in deep space. And we are just getting started.
