Our heart does not just pump blood, but it pumps life. Proverbs 4:23 instructs us to “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” Another translation says to “keep vigilant watch over your heart; that’s where life starts.” David recognized heart issues were a big deal because in the 51st Psalm he said, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” Our natural heart maintains our life, but our spiritual heart governs how we deal with life issues. That is why the Bible tells us to “guard our heart.” We have all had those moments of being anxious and worried about something. The bible’s remedy for that is prayer and thanksgiving instead of panic and despair. Philippians 4:6-7 instructs us to “be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” The good news is, when we choose prayer over panic and despair, the peace of God guards our heart and mind. So, when overwhelmed always look to God who can guard both your heart and your mind.
