Terri Leo-Wilson, State Representative, District 23
(Galveston, TX) – As communities across Texas gear up to commemorate Juneteenth this week, State Representative Terri Leo Wilson proudly joins in the celebration of this pivotal moment in American history. Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks the emancipation of some of the last enslaved African Americans in the United States. This day holds particular significance in Galveston, where Union General Gordon Granger proclaimed freedom from slavery on June 19, 1865, by reading General Order No. 3.
“Juneteenth is more than just a date on the calendar; it represents the triumph of freedom over oppression and the resilience of the human spirit,” stated Representative Leo Wilson. “It is essential that we continue to educate Texans about this historic day, ensuring that the legacy of those who fought for freedom is preserved and honored.”
Representative Leo Wilson spoke at Galveston’s 10th Annual Juneteenth Gala, held at the Ashton Villa Ballroom on June 13, 2024. This event provided area residents with an opportunity to come together and commemorate one of the most pivotal events in American history.
In Galveston, the birthplace of Juneteenth, the spirit of emancipation is celebrated year-round. Visit Galveston and the Galveston Park Board play crucial roles in preserving this legacy. Through various initiatives, including the allocation of grant funds to local organizations and events dedicated to Juneteenth, these entities ensure that the celebrations resonate beyond the local community. These grants support parades, exhibitions, and other community-driven events that highlight the unique essence of Galveston and its historical significance.
“Each year, our commitment to honoring Juneteenth goes beyond acknowledgment; it’s about actively preserving the legacy and fostering a deeper understanding of our shared history,” said Representative Leo Wilson. “The efforts of Visit Galveston and the Galveston Park Board amplify this message, taking our story to the national stage.”
Honoring Juneteenth is a year-round commitment. As Texas prepares to celebrate Juneteenth, Representative Terri Leo Wilson encourages all Texans to reflect on this historic day, participate in the numerous events across the state, and honor the journey towards freedom. https://www.visitgalveston.com/events/annual events/juneteenth/.
