Sheryl Shaw, Anahuac resident and chairman of the Chambers County Historical Society, has joined the Chambers County Museum at Wallisville as co-director effective June 1, 2025. Shaw joins long-time director Marie Hughes as Hughes is choosing to work part-time so she can spend more time with her family.
Hughes is recognized for her beautiful writing and recording of our local history through publication of The Age, a quarterly newsletter. She has spent hundreds of hours interviewing members of families who have shaped the county’s development through ranching, farming, fishing, and other industries. Hughes then highlights the history of the families in The Age. She has also written two books, The Age 2021-2022 and The Age 2023-2024 which is a compilation of her writings about Chambers County’s history.
Shaw is also recognized as an expert in Chambers County history. Her love of history is evident in the projects she has spearheaded to preserve the history and culture of Chambers County. From advocating for the creation of the monument “The First Stand”, of William B. Travis and Patrick Jack, which was placed in Fort Anahuac Park, to preserving the sanctity of the General Thomas Jefferson Chambers House as it was moved from its original location at the site of the new jail/justice center, Shaw has always encouraged the importance of the county to preserve its history.
Sheryl Shaw and Marie Hughes have always been the “go to” persons for information on the county’s history. The Chambers County Museum at Wallisville is now truly the “home” of Chambers County history.
