Austin, TX – Rep. Terri Leo Wilson issued the following statement in response to the recently filed lawsuit by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) challenging the state’s policy of granting in-state tuition to illegal immigrants:
“I fully support this lawsuit, which rightfully challenges a deeply misguided policy that has unfairly prioritized illegal immigrants over Texas citizens. As a proud representative of our community, I believe we must always put Texans first. That includes making sure taxpayer-funded benefits like in-state tuition go to those who are here legally.
During the most recent legislative session, I filed House Bill 160 to repeal this practice. Despite my consistent efforts to carry similar legislation in prior sessions, HB 160 was never given a hearing. It is disappointing that such an important issue was ignored while Texas families continue to shoulder the cost.
The extension of in-state tuition to illegal immigrants, enacted by a previous legislature, was a mistake. It disregarded the principle of equal treatment under the law and created unfair advantages for those who are not in the country legally.
I commend Attorney General Paxton and the DOJ for taking this important step. This lawsuit is about fairness, accountability, and respecting the rule of law. I remain committed to defending the rights and interests of Texas citizens first.”
