Acts 8 gives us the amazing story of the Ethiopian eunuch who was traveling home from Jerusalem where it seems he had bought a copy of Isaiah. He’s reading it as Philip listens and asks him: “Do you understand what you are reading?”. He says no, that he needs someone to explain it. He was reading Isaiah 53 which tells about the good news of Jesus. The Ethiopian was not a Jew and in fact was not allowed to worship in the temple even in the court of the gentiles because he was a eunuch, but he humbly believed in God. He was a sinner and where else could he turn? Jesus was good news as He fulfilled the promises to the Jews in the Old Testament, thus he asked “Here is water. What hinders me from being baptised?” Philip said “If you believe Jesus is the Son of God you may.” Suddenly he understands what he needs to do to have his sins washed away: believe Jesus. He gets baptised which is a picture of washing away sins. It doesn’t help anyone unless they believe, but if they do, it is a wonderful thing. Do you understand? Come learn about who Jesus is and what He did.
