John 5 gives us the story of a man who couldn’t walk. He had waited for a miracle healing 38 years. He believed that whenever the water was stirred it was an angel doing it and the first person in, got healed. The bible never gives evidence that God heals involving contests. The man should have figured out by now that he was not dealing with God but a man made lie. Jesus comes along and tells him to take up his bed and walk, and instantly the man could walk. On his way home he meets some Jews who objected to him carrying his bed on the Sabbath. For 38 years he was loyal to a superstition that never worked but when confronted about breaking a man made rule, he did not stand up and realise he had been in the presence of God. He didn’t even get Jesus’s name. Jesus finds him and tells him not to sin anymore or something worse would happen to him. The man’s response? He went to the Jews and reported it was Jesus who healed him. He’s not praising Jesus but trying to get Him in trouble. He had finally encountered a real God who did a real miracle for him and he chooses to be against Jesus. Pay attention. There is a real God with real help. Would you recognise Him and praise Him when He shows up? Everyone gets an opportunity. Don’t miss out.
