The last week of Jesus’ ministry we find the Sadducees confronting Him with a question they were confident would stump Him. They did not believe in an afterlife and only accepted the 1st 5 books of the Old Testament. Moses had written concerning levirate marriage (Deuteronomy 25) where in Israel, if a brother who is married dies without an heir, if he has a brother, the brother is to marry the widow to produce an heir. Now today this seems very strange to us, but God commanded it to the Israelites, and I would advise you not to reject something you don’t understand as crazy. The Sadducees were trying to make people who believe in a heaven look foolish. Christ answers, “Aren’t you deceived because you don’t know the scriptures or the power of God?”. The Sadducees didn’t know enough to question God. They thought they did, but He hits them with information they are ignorant of. As we deal with God and His word, let us be very respectful and humble as none of us know everything and much we think we understand we often realize later was incorrect. God helps us know what we need to know, but only if we are open and humble. The way to be wise is to allow that God is wise.
