The holidays are here, and many people are looking forward to ringing in the season filled with gatherings of friends and family, holiday parties, and big events. Christmas decorations are up in stores, malls, and people’s homes. Holiday themed music and television are appearing across all over your favorite channels. There is no doubt that the holidays are here.

Not all of us have friends and family to gather with or have events and parties to attend. Some of us are all alone. And it doesn’t feel good. Some families don’t mix well. Or they are too far away and you cannot travel over the holidays. You might have outlived everyone. The heart breaks as we yearn to spend the holidays with people that we love and adore.

Fortunately, there are many things you can do to squash loneliness and to bring joy to you this season after all.

Try seeking out social connections. Reach out to loved ones, even if you can only connect with each other over the phone or video chat. A short message to someone you trust, joining an online gathering, or interacting in a space where people share holiday feelings (books, forums, interest groups). It will warm your heart. Attend local events whether they are at church or sponsored events. Join local community groups on social media such as Facebook to see the latest events in your area. Volunteering is a great way to be social and help those in need as well. You might really enjoy yourself.

Create tiny rituals for yourself. Crete a special drink or dessert, walk at a certain time, listen to a playlist you love… Do something that gives the day shape and comfort.

Do something grounding. Watch a movie, start a hobby, cook something simple but delicious or even clean your little corner of the world. Making positive movements throughout the day can lighten your spirits. And, most importantly, let the day be what it is. Don’t force things to happen. Reset your mind that this is the day the Lord has made … rejoice and be glad in it!
