High Island — The High Island School District celebrated a groundbreaking for a new campus, marking a significant milestone after severe damage to the existing school’s gym and other buildings.

The current building, constructed in 1957, has endured numerous storms. Dean Crooks, a parent, said, “No building has survived this long in this environment, the salt there, the storms, the floods.” Principal Doyle Bell noted that the new facility will include safety precautions to combat future flooding.

Superintendent David Walker emphasized the importance of maintaining a vibrant community, stating, “We want to keep maintaining a vibrant community and to give back to this area because we are remote and so they are our future leaders.”

The new pre-K through 12th-grade school is expected to open in the 2027 school year, with 80% of contractors living in the area.
