George Washington Carver & Double Bayou SchoolsReunion Committee Awards $3,000 Scholarship

On Saturday, August 15, 2026, the George Washington Carver & Double Bayou Schools Reunion Committee held a scholarship reception at St. James United Methodist Church in Anahuac, Texas, to honor and recognize a deserving student from Chambers County.

This year marked the second year that the Committee has presented a scholarship as part of its ongoing effort to continue the legacy of the George Washington Carver and Double Bayou Schools. Both schools represent a proud history and lasting legacy in the community, and the Committee remains committed to preserving that legacy by investing in the education and future of young people.

The Committee is extremely proud to announce Ms. Ashlyn Whittington of Hankamer, Texas, as this year’s recipient of a $3,000.00 scholarship.

Ashlyn is a May graduate of Anahuac High School, where she graduated Cum Laude and was a member of the National Honor Society, DECA Business Club, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, and Black History Club. She also served as a varsity cheerleader and Teacher’s Aide.

She was also committed to serving her community and performing volunteer work. Ashlyn participated in local highway cleanup efforts, assisted with Anahuac Primary Field Day, sold t-shirts at Texas Gator Fest, volunteered at Math Fun Day at Anahuac Elementary School, and assisted with the Anahuac Booster Club.

Ashlyn will attend Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, this semester, where she plans to major in nursing. Her goal is to become a Registered Nurse (RN) and dedicate her career to caring for others.

The George Washington Carver & Double Bayou Schools Reunion Committee congratulates Ashlyn Whittington on this well-deserved accomplishment and wishes her continued success as she begins this exciting chapter of her educational journey.
