On the evening of July 13, 2023, two young men were killed and another critically injured when a car carrying the three men hit the back of a large farm tractor pulling a piece of farm equipment, then burst into flames on SH 1985, west of SH 124, near East Bay Bayou. JaVion West and Travon Williams died at the scene and Gage Leath was flown by life flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. Leath was determined to be the driver of the car.

Chambers County Sheriff’s Office received multiple calls about an “attempt to local a dangerous vehicle”. Witnesses say that the vehicle was traveling at least 100 mph on SH 124 heading west towards Anahuac. Calls came in around 8:30pm and the accident happened shortly thereafter.

Gage Lloyd Leath, 18, was booked into the Chambers County Jail on November 22, 2024, and charged with two counts of manslaughter. Leath was booked on a commitment and does not have to pay bond at this time. He was released November 24, 2024.

According to records, Leath has received deferred adjudication, 10 years with community service of 240  hours, deep lung breath analysis mechanism, random urinalysis testing, a SCRAM device, or Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitor, which is a tamper-resistant ankle bracelet that measures a person’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC) by testing their perspiration, concurrent with 24DCR0875, Victim Impact Panel (MADD) – the primary purpose of a Victim Impact Panel course is to educate people who have been convicted of alcohol-related offenses about the consequences of their actions on victims and society as a whole, and a probation officer may visit his home at any time.

Without explanation, Leath was charged with manslaughter, not intoxicated manslaughter. And sources say, I have not confirmed yet, that Leath only has to serve time in jail on weekends.
