It’s no secret that American energy runs through Houston, and many of the materials needed to support oil and natural gas production are in Texas’ 36th Congressional District. The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) is a critical leader in the offshore energy industry, and this week I had the opportunity to sit down with them. Serving as the primary classification society for United States government and commercial vessels, it has influence across the maritime, offshore energy, and technology sectors. ABS recently entered into a partnership with the Department of Energy to advance modern nuclear technology at sea. They are on the front lines of nuclear energy in maritime. I’m honored they call Houston home, and I look forward to the ways their leadership will position America to lead in this emerging field. |
There are organizations across our region that play a key role in ensuring Southeast Texas remains a great place to live, work, and raise a family for years to come. The South East Texas Regional Planning Commission and the Deep East Texas Council of Governments (DETCOG) are two of those organizations. For many years, I’ve had the privilege of working with the South East Texas Regional Planning Commission. By bringing together local governments throughout Hardin, Jefferson, Jasper, and Orange counties, they tackle challenges that are often outside the scope of any one city. From emergency preparedness to economic development, their ability to solve difficult problems has greatly benefited Southeast Texas and strengthened our communities. The Deep East Texas Council of Governments celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, marking decades of exceptional service to our community. I served on the DETCOG board as mayor of Woodville years ago, and I’m honored to have watched it evolve into the organization it is today. They embody regional cooperation, bridging the gap between state and federal resources and smaller, rural communities. Sixty years is an incredible accomplishment, and only the beginning of its continued impact on the quality of life for rural Americans in the years to come. |
Southeast Texas is at the forefront of major infrastructure investments that will shape our region and play a pivotal role in America’s energy and transportation sectors. This week, I had the opportunity to join the Bay Area Houston Transportation Partnership, Economic Alliance Houston Port Region, and the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership in their Congressional Panel at the 3rd Bi-Annual Southeast Texas Transportation Summit. We discussed the role Southeast Texas plays in addressing national needs for energy security, supply chain reliability, port competitiveness, and long-term economic growth. I believe our region is best equipped to handle the growing economic demands, but we must have the infrastructure and personnel to meet those needs. Developing a comprehensive approach that strengthens partnerships and expands infrastructure is crucial to ensuring Southeast Texas remains at the center of America’s energy industry. |
