The Wellness Center at Bayside
Have you ever thought about how to improve your wellbeing? With all the changes and obstacles that 2020 has brought to light for us, our family, friends, and community; I think it is an important time to maybe sit back for a moment and evaluate our wellbeing.
Wellbeing is defined as the state of being comfortable, healthy and most importantly happy. There are many forms of wellbeing some of which are physical, economic, emotional and psychological.
Research has shown that there are five simple things that we can do to build resilience, boost our wellbeing and lower our risk of developing mental health problems. The first way is to Connect. When we work on connecting and strengthening our relationships, we get the reward of feeling closer too and valued by others at home, in our personal life, and at work. The second way is to Keep Learning. When we keep our brain active by seeking out new opportunities to learn and challenge ourselves, it positively stimulates our brains.
The third way is to Give. Demonstrating an act of kindness whether small or large to a friend or stranger can increase your happiness, life satisfaction and general sense of wellbeing. The fourth is to Be Active. Being physically active triggers endorphins in our bodies that improves our physical health, mood and wellbeing while also decreasing stress, anxiety, and depression. The fifth and final way is to Take Notice. Being in the present and paying more attention to your thoughts and feelings and your surroundings will help to boost your wellbeing.
Now is time to act on our wellbeing. Let’s start by trying to connect with people around us. This could be family, a friend, a neighbor, or colleague that you haven’t talked to in a while. Remember to always keep learning by trying something new or rediscovering an old interest. Maybe it is time to take on a new responsibility at work, to challenge you to the next level.
It is so important to stay active throughout our life. With Fall weather approaching, this may be the perfect time to go outside and plant some flowers or take a nice walk around the neighborhood or at the local park. Try doing something nice for a friend, coworker, or stranger; I guarantee this little act of kindness will boost your wellbeing. Lastly take notice and appreciate your surroundings; breathe. Taking the time and effort to practice the steps to boost our wellbeing will produce a healthier and happier life.
