Humility or humbleness is well spoken of many times in the scriptures. To be humble is to put God ahead of ourselves and others, and also to place others ahead of us. We naturally love and care for ourselves before God and others but humility calls for us to trust and obey God enough that others take precedence over us. The big question for us in life is who is number one, who is most important? It needs to be God. “Humble yourself before the Lord, and He will exalt you.” (James 4:10) We crave to be exalted, to be great, wise, and right but humility is the only road that leads there. So when do we grow up and get to do what we want to do? Basically never. We will never be God or as wise and right as Him. We come upon the quandary of the question “Does it matter what we think or want?” No. Always follow God. Could a desire you have be based in God? That’s possible but beware. Our desires are very persistent and convincing. Everyone needs to bend our knee to Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior. What if we don’t want to, are embarrassed, or uncomfortable? Do it anyway! Some argue it needs to be our desire or it’s not for us, just an act. Nope. Once you know it’s what God wants, that’s enough.
