Hundreds of area residents showed their support and gratitude to the late David Murrell at a benefit held in his memory this past Saturday at the Winnie-Stowell Community Building. Murrell passed away on January 14th from stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

Murrell was known for always helping the East Chambers FFA, the EC Booster Club, the Texas Rice Festival, and many other nonprofit organizations with his cooking for their fundraisers and events. He took pride in his chicken/sausage gumbo, chili, and ribs recipes.

The Winnie Noon Optimist Club cooked chili and gumbo using David’s recipes. The Winnie-Stowell Lions Club, and the Winnie Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors turned out to assist with serving and distributing the food and desserts.  Many thanks to Riceland Healthcare, the Original Lercy’s, Market Basket, the Winnie Area Chamber of Commerce, and Tia Juanita’s Fish Camp for providing desserts and drinks for the benefit. Several WACC ambassadors also baked fresh pastries and banana pudding.

Attendees had a silent auction to bid for wonderful gifts ranging from purses to bagged crawfish to wine. The live auction brought out competitive juices. Bidding was spirited on rifles and handguns and “baskets of booze” among other items. After the live auction, the attendees were entertained by Michael Farrell and the Coastline Hippies.

All proceeds go towards David’s medical and funeral expenses.
